Rain couldn’t dampen one sweet Saturday in Vail

Jason PetersVail, CO, Colorado

The only thing that could sweeten a rainy morning last Saturday was the sun that came out and stayed. Of course, all the delicious sweets that were being showcased at Sweet on Vail were a bright spot on the day as well. The first annual Sweet on Vail event hosted by the Vail Chamber & Business Association was deemed a success by many. The visitors at the event enjoyed a diverse lineup of desserts and entertainment, from root beer floats too the sweet sounds of DooWop Denny. An intense judging competition determined who had some of the best desserts in Vail. The bulk of the competition was between Vail’s local restaurants, although there was one category open to the public. With more than 23 different desserts entered into the four competitive categories – Chocolate, Ice Cream, Pastry and Open – the judges had a difficult time choosing who was the best. But winners were chosen, and here they are:Restaurant winners: Sweet Basil – Chocolate Grasshopper Soda.Billy’s Island Grill – Mud Pie.Batter – Red Velvet Cup Cake.Lancelot – Red Bavarian Custard.Vicki LaScala of Vail made an amazing apple pie to take first prize in the community category. “The key to a good pie crust is not mixing the lard too much.” Vicki said. “I don’t use a machine to mix, only a fork – it is much easier to keep the consistency.” Asked about her future plans, Vicki said firmly, “I am coming back next year to defend my title!”Although there were only a few named winners, all of the desserts judged were phenomenal. It is almost impossible to say one was better than the other. The judges did a great job giving their input – it is certainly not easy to eat as much sugar as they did.As a limited organization, events like these would be impossible to produce on our own without support from the community. Thanks from the Vail Chamber & Business Association to all of our volunteers for your help. It is truly invaluable.
