Cliff Thompson

Heavy rains throughout June brought the rainfall total to nearly 60 percent above average. A total of 1.72 inches of rain fell, with nearly half an inch of that falling June 30 during a day-long soaking. Average for the month is 1.07 inches.”It was wet enough,” said Avon weatherwatcher Frank Doll, 83, who has been tracking weather measurements from his back yard in Avon since 1968. Temperatures were just about average, Doll said. There was one frost on June 11 when the morning temperature dropped to 31 degrees. That’s not unusual, Doll said.”I usually put my plants out the first of June and start praying, hoping to get through the month without a frost,” he said.High temperature for June was 89 on the 17th.July was ushered in by warmer, dryer weather that is expected to last through the holiday weekend, although the forecast warns of isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms.Cliff Thompson can be contacted via e-mail at cthompson@vaildaily.com or by calling 949-0555 ext. 450.
