Ram Lane Fire burns 40 acres on Silt Mesa
Vail, CO Colorado
SILT ” A wildfire threatened two homes on Silt Mesa on Saturday afternoon.
More than 80 firefighters helped keep the lightning-sparked Ram Lane Fire to about 40 acres Saturday afternoon, Bureau of Land Management spokesman David Boyd said.
There are about 10 homes in the area, and the fire burned within 10 yards of one home, Boyd said. It is a recently completed home that is not occupied and has no vegetation around it. Flames came within 30 yards of another home, but firefighters stopped its advance with water.
No structures were lost, and the homes were out of immediate danger Saturday night.
“Firefighters saw the lightning hit and the smoke afterwards,” Boyd said. “The very rapid response kept the fire to the size it is.”
The fire started two miles north of Silt near the east end of Ram Lane (County Road 250), where it makes a 90-degree turn to the west. The fire is burning on private land and Bureau of Land Management-administered land, in a mixture of sagebrush and pinyon juniper.
The fire spread rapidly Saturday afternoon, but by evening, fire activity had moderated.
Boyd said there is no containment estimate, but “they have a wet line around most of the fire.” Firefighters were planning to work into the night and all day today to control the fire.
Local and federal crews were aided by a helicopter and a single-engine air tanker.
“These are still really extreme (fire) conditions with all the dry grass and high temperatures,” Boyd said.
This is the third fire on Silt Mesa in one week. The causes of the other two are still undetermined.
