Record crowds expected for Denver MLK parade

DENVER, Colorado ” Record numbers are expected for Denver, Colorado’s annual Marade to celebrate the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., a day before Barack Obama is sworn in as president.

About 6,000 people participated in the celebration last year but previous Marades have drawn up to 30,000 and organizers are expecting this year to surpass that. Vern Howard, chairman of the Martin Luther King Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission, says the historic week has prompted people from as far as Sterling and Grand Junction to want to take part in this year’s celebration.

The Marade got its name because it’s a combination march and parade. It begins at 10 a.m. at the King statute in City Park and ends at the Civic Center.

King’s birthday was declared a state holiday on 1984.
