Red Cliff studio tour: Always composing
Vail, CO Colorado
RED CLIFF, Colorado –Meet painter, Joan Norris – always painting the real world we live in.
Her life is built around painting; her schedule, for ever and a day, has included time for painting. Hundreds of paintings show her dedication and what some would say is an obsession, but she describes it as her calling.
“A painter paints always – and that’s who I am, that is how I experience the world – compositional gems of light, color, texture,” she says. “Nature is reduced to shapes and color – composing it brings all these dynamics together.”
The 12th annual Red Cliff Studio Tour, on Saturday and Sunday, is the perfect opportunity to see Norris’ work in the studio she shares with her husband, photographer Jim Lamont. You will see these “compositional gems” translated into paintings.
“When you are looking at anything you are thinking ‘that purple against the yellow works, how about the vertical form of those aspen, or I would love to paint that person – great skin tones, great bone structure,'” she says. “I am always seeing, always composing the next painting.”
As a teacher for 18 years at Colorado Mountain College, Norris has shared this philosophy with many students. Norris, who received her bachelor of fine arts from University of Colorado, is one of the founders of the Red Cliff Studio Tour.
The 12th annual Red Cliff Studio Tour is Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Norris’ studio is located at 654 Spruce St., Red Cliff; maps for the tour will be available there. For more information call 970-827-9662.
