Red Cross deploying local volunteers
The local American Red Cross chapter expects to deploy volunteers Monday afternoon to areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
The powerful huricane came ashore near Southern Plaquemines Parish, La., early Monday morning. Due to power outages, water-pumping stations in the city of New Orleans have ceased to operate.
“The primary focus of American Red Cross relief efforts will be on feeding, sheltering and bulk distribution,” said Jean Hermanson, executive director of the American Red Cross’ Western Colorado Chapter. “Due to the severity of the storm, we need to do whatever we can to get people on the road to be able to provide vital relief services.”
The names of local volutneers headed to help with clean up will be announced Monday afternoon, Hermanson said.
Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to the local American Red Cross chapter at 506 Gunnison Avenue, Grand Junction, CO 81501 or by calling 1-800-HELPNOW. Internet users can contribute online at http://www.redcross.org.
