EAGLE — Whether plying his craft on comedy stages across the country, cruise ships on the high seas or on some of television’s biggest comedy showcases, Steve “Mudflap” McGrew has been plying his southern-fried humor, since long before it became fashionable, in clubs throughout the country, large and small, in backwaters and major cities. With more than 30 years of hard work under his belt, McGrew’s high-octane personality and keenly humorous observations will be on full display Saturday at 8 p.m. on the stage of the Back Bowl when Comedy Night at the Bowlmor returns.
Working as a cartoonist in the newsroom of the Houston Chronicle in the mid ’70s, he developed a reputation for translating his sharp wit through the pen. It was an easy and logical transition to the stage of a local comedy club, where his persona was more animated than his drawing could ever be. His ability to connect with his audience didn’t go unnoticed, and soon he became a regular at Houston’s popular Comedy Workshop, which was a hotbed for up and coming “redneck” comics.
After earning a spot as a semifinalist on Showtime’s iconic comedy showcase “Full Frontal Comedy,” McGrew has gone on to appear on a variety of comedy showcases, including A&E’s “Evening at the Improv,” Showtime’s “Comedy All Stars,” “Caroline’s Comedy Hour,” TNN’s “Nashville Now,” “Music City Tonight” and “Funny Business,” VH-1’s “Stand Up, Stand Up” and MTV’s “Half Hour Comedy Show.” Ultimately he earned his own half-hour comedy special on Comedy Central.
When not working clubs and TV, he has opened for many of the top comedy and musical acts of the day, working with entertainers as diverse as Billy Crystal, Sam Kinison, Dolly Parton, B.B. King and The Doobie Brothers and many more.
McGrew’s fast-paced, unconventional style and energetic delivery have led to him being described as a “runaway redneck freight train.” This reputation and the surging popularity of blue-collar comedy in the U.S. drew interest and a string of invitations to appear in the U.K. and Canada as a headliner both on stage and TV. He has also made a series of recorded shows on CD and DVD and hosts his own podcast.
This show is part of the Back Bowl’s popular Comedy Night at the Bowlmor series and features opener Jordan Doll. Doll, a Colorado native, is a writer, actor and a regular at Denver’s Comedy Works and was a finalist in the 2012 New Faces of Comedy contest. He appears at clubs throughout the region.
Tickets are on sale now for $12 in advance and $15 on the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Back Bowl or by phone with a credit card.
