Reggae meets righteousness
Ansel Cridland, part of the storied singing trio The Meditations, believes music is the key to global change and personal joy.”Only music can change the world,” says Cridland. “Music is the key to life right now. You will have more cares (and cures) in the world if people respect the music. It helps people grin, and it lift dem spirits.””Cridland says the most important things to change in the world are: “One: Nobody mek war. And, it’s been going on since before I and you come in this world,” said Cridland. “Why? Why is it that war has to happen and people have to die?”
Cridland went on to list general suffering, hunger and healthcare as the other major problems that we all could solve together if our governments would operate in democratic fashion as true servants to the will of the masses.Cridland says that he always has a lot of work to do. He is joined in song by Danny Clarke, and Winston Watson.”Being in the studio is a pleasure to me,” says Cridland. “Even if I’m not working, I’ll be enjoying listening, or its creation. I love the music.”
Cridland and crew recently finished their newest album “Jamaica,” and have released it on their own label, Meditationsmusic Records. Despite the respect the group deserves for putting out a consciously oriented independent production, “Jamaica” has not seen the popularity it probably deserves. This is the harmony trio that produced “Blackman Redemption” and “Rastaman Live Up!” with Bob Marley and The Wailers, after all.”I’ll always remember that, you know,” says Cridland. “It (our collaboration) was a very spiritual part of the legend. Wonderful memories, man.”The group’s not letting the poor album sales get them down, though. They’re receiving crowds in the low hundreds on a typical performance night, and they continue to put on a solid musical experience with big spirit.
“Everywhere it’s like the people, dem don’t want to leave,” said Cridland. The full touring group will make it up for the shows, which includes four instrumental musicians, the three singers and a producer.Check out some music and background on the group at http://www.meditationsmusic.com.
