GYPSUM — When the Gypsum Recreation Center opens its doors on Tuesday, Sept. 4, users are in for a pleasant surprise.
After a month of renovations, work at the facility will be done and new operations policies will be in place.
The $500,000 renovation features 24 new pieces of state-of-the-art cardio equipment, a new Synergy 360 station that will accommodate up to 15 users at a time, sports performance flooring in the weight-training area and new carpeting throughout the facility.
The town of Gypsum chipped in $250,000 for the building improvements, and Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District paid for the equipment upgrades.
While the renovation didn’t expand the building itself, it makes better use of the available space. The current upstairs staff desk has been removed and the cardio equipment has been rearranged, freeing up about 1,900 square feet that patrons can use as a stretch area. Treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical machines have been placed closer to the windows on the west side of the room and rotated to overlook the climbing wall on the east side. Additionally, a new staff office has been built, tucked away in a corner of the weight-training area.
The new physical features at the Gypsum Recreation Center are just part of this year’s renovation. Programming is getting its first revamp since the center opened back in 2006.
Up until now, patrons paid extra for fitness classes and child care services at the center. Beginning Saturday, Sept. 1, fitness classes, child care and the popular Tumble Tots program will be included as part of a center membership. With the extra value added to memberships, the center has increased its prices for the first time ever.
Scott Robinson, marketing and communications manager for WECMRD, said the center isn’t planning a single grand opening celebration next week, opting instead to welcome locals and visitors to drop by any time.
“Come celebrate with us. We have extra staff on hand at the front desk to do tours and discuss the new member benefits,” he said.
With the renovation complete, the Gypsum Rec Center will return to its regular operating hours schedule beginning next week. The center is open from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The center will be closed for the Labor Day holiday.
