Rescuers looking for skiers lost near Minturn
Vail, CO Colorado
MINTURN – Vail Mountain Rescue crews were looking for a father and son Monday night who got lost while skiing outside of Minturn.
The men were skiing east of Highway 24 but it was unclear if they had been on Vail Mountain or what type of skis they were on, said Sgt. Bob Silva of the Eagle County’s Sheriff’s Office.
“Sounds like they got some bad directions,” Silva said. “They zigged when they should have zagged.”
Rescuers were able to triangulate the skiers’ cell phone and believed the pair was within a mile of a trailhead around 8 p.m., Monday night.
But the rescue was made more urgent because the skiers were not equipped to spend the night outdoors, Silva said.
“My understanding is that they were advised to hunker down and wait for VMR to come up and get them,” Silva said. “Doesn’t sound like they were prepared to stay overnight. Didn’t have any cold weather gear but they do have cell-phone contact, which is good.”
