Restaurant Kelly Liken hosts charity cocktail reception
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado – Restaurant Kelly Liken will host a cocktail reception to benefit the Food Service Express Backpack Program on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Founded in 1998, Food Rescue Express created the Backpack Express program, which is in its second year, to provide much needed food and meals to preschool and elementary students in Eagle County schools. This program helps to sustain these children through the weekend by providing them with backpacks full of nourishing, easy-to-prepare foods to take home from school on Fridays.
“Many people don’t realize that there are children going hungry right here in our own community,” Liken said.
Guests will enjoy passed appetizers inspired by Liken’s recent appearance and winning dishes on Season 7 of Bravo’s “Top Chef D.C.” She says we can expect to see her winning braised pork carnitas from episode two “Back to School Elimination Challenge,” as well as new dishes inspired by the show and the final-four episode filmed in Singapore, including an exotic curried shrimp and a refreshing cucumber soup. Entry will also include two drink tickets good for pours of local microbrews, house wine, or the special “Food Rescue Express” signature cocktail. A cash bar is also available. One hundred percent of ticket sales will go directly to the Food Rescue Express Backpack Program. Guests will also enjoy a special live performance by singer and songwriter Kevin Heinz, a 2009 Telluride Blues competition finalist.
“Everyone is struggling in this economic time and it is especially difficult for our families who could barely feed their children in good times,” said Melisa Rewold-Thuon, Avon Elementary School Principal. “For the families who have nothing else to cutback from their household budgets, this program ensures that our students do not go through the weekend hungry or malnourished.”
The event is being sponsored by K. Furtado Wines and Crazy Mountain Brewery. Tickets are available for $25 per person, or $20 with a food donation at the door, and can be purchased in advance by calling Restaurant Kelly Liken at 970-479-0175.
There are also sponsorship opportunities available for those who cannot attend the cocktail benefit reception.
“Sponsoring a child is another great way to get involved in the program,” says Food Rescue Express Director Toni Bern, who is a third generation food philanthropist. The first soup kitchen in Brooklyn, New York began out of her grandmother’s kitchen. Bern’s continues in the family tradition in order to help more children who go hungry in Vail Valley everyday. Individual child sponsorship is $22.50 a month, or $177 a year. Checks can be made out to “Food Rescue Express” and mailed to P.O. Box 2874 Edwards, CO 81632.
