VAIL — As with any skilled practice, the more time you spend doing it, the more second nature it becomes.

During the Vail Vitality Center's upcoming Restorative Awareness yoga workshop, participants will spend time in restorative yoga postures. Holding these postures for sustained periods promotes the parasympathetic nervous system response, known as "rest and digest" mode, and opposite the sympathetic nervous system's "fight or flight."

This workshop will teach participants how to maintain parasympathetic dominance and awareness so they're more likely to stay calm even when faced with stressful situations. Supported by props, attendees can relax and rest in each pose, including gentle backbends and light twists, while focusing on their breath.

"Restorative postures are held for a sustained period to promote the parasympathetic response," Lavigne said. "This practice is made more powerful by working with the breath; when we dictate the breath, we dictate the nervous system. Yoga is essentially a practice in establishing and maintaining parasympathetic dominance and it all comes down to the breath."

The workshop will take place from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29. The cost is $20 for nonmembers or $15 for Vail Vitality Center members. Call 970-476-7960 to register or visit http://www.vailvitalitycenter.com for more information.
