Retired war correspondent dies skiing at Keystone

KEYSTONE, Colorado ” A 61-year-old Boulder man died on Wednesday after running into a tree on an intermediate trail at Keystone Ski Resort.

According to Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson, John McWethy was skiing fast and missed a turn, sliding chest-first into a tree. Richardson ruled the death as accidental and the cause of death as fatal blunt-force chest injuries.

Richardson also reported the man was a former television correspondent for ABC before retiring and moving to Boulder last fall. According to ABC, McWethy was in the Pentagon when it was hit by a hijacked passenger plane on 9/11, and also reported from war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.



According to Keystone Resort spokesperson Kate Lessman, the accident occurred on Porcupine trail around 10 a.m. Ski patrol responded, and McWethy, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Summit Medical Center where he was pronounced dead later Wednesday afternoon.
