VAIL, Colorado – Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America” and a breast cancer survivor, will serve as guest speaker for the Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group’s 17th annual Celebration of Life Luncheon on July 22.The event will be held at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort & Spa.Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2007. Her book, “From the Heart: Seven Rules to Live By,” includes information about her battle with the disease.The mission of the Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group is to ease the financial and emotional burdens endured by those women in Eagle County who are battling breast cancer. The organization’s fundraising efforts help residents who are in need of financial assistance. Additionally, each local woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer receives a check from the group in the amount of $500 – the Day to Play program – to help relieve the stress of treatment. The funds can be used to offset medical expenses, or for just a relaxing indulgence like a day at the spa.For the group’s most recent program, in conjunction with local fifth-grader Lily DeMuth, a “Pink Lemonade Bubble Gum Day to Play,” each child whose mother is undergoing treatment is given $50.Over the past 17 years, the Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group has raised nearly $800,000. Over 200 women have received Day to Play funds and another 25 have each received more than $2,000 in assistance. To date, the group has donated $75,000 to the Sonnenalp Breast & Diagnostic Imaging Center at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center and another $50,000 to the Cancer Caring House, Jack’s Place, adjacent to the Shaw Regional Cancer Center, that provides patient accommodations. Another $50,000 was directed to the Shaw for the purchase of a PET Scanner.Tickets for the Celebration of Life Luncheon are $125. Sponsorship tables are also available.
