Rock slide repairs finished in Glenwood Canyon
Vail, CO Colorado
GLENWOOD CANYON – All lanes of Interstate 70 are open after crews completed repairs in Glenwood Canyon after the rock slide in March that closed the freeway for about four days.
The contractor, Flatiron Construction, earned $31,000 in early-completion incentives by beating the May 31 deadline. Crews repaired the roadway, railings, median and hillside barriers, and strengthened the bridge’s steel girders. Also, 14,000 feet of wire mesh was installed along the canyon wall, near the bottom of the chutes where the rock slide occurred.
The costs of the rock slide and the repairs came to nearly $2.2 million, which will be reimbursed by the Federal Highway Administration. Colorado is also requesting additional federal assistance to conduct a study on how to prevent rock slides in the canyon.
