Routt County cuts workers’ pay by 10 percent
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado ” The Routt County Commissioners have cut county workers’ pay by 10 percent to help close a $4.9 million budget deficit.
Commissioners approved the cut Wednesday night after a long and contentious hearing attended by more than 80 county employees.
The cuts will be reflected in April 15 paychecks. The move is expected to save more than $1 million this year.
Commissioners rejected a suggestion by some employees that they impose furloughs instead of pay cuts. But the commissioners said they would evaluate furloughs and other options in the coming weeks.
Some employees complained that pay cuts, unlike furloughs, give them no way to make up for lost income. Others said they didn’t get enough advance notice of Wednesday’s meeting.
