Ruckriegle, who presided over Bryant case in Eagle, to retire

BRECKENRIDGE, Colorado – District Judge W. Terry Ruckriegle, who presided over the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case, will retire Aug. 31.

The Fifth Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet in the training room of the Summit County Justice Center on Aug. 20 to interview and select nominees for appointment by the governor to the office of district judge for the Fifth Judicial District (Eagle, Clear Creek, Lake and Summit counties). The new judge will start work on Jan. 1, 2011.

To be eligible for appointment to fill the vacancy, the applicant must be a qualified elector of the Fifth Judicial District and must have been admitted to the practice of law in Colorado for five years. The current annual salary for this position is $128,598. The initial term of office of a district judge is a provisional term of two years. After that, the incumbent district judge, if retained by the voters, has a term of six years.

Applications are due Aug. 2. Any person wishing to suggest a candidate to fill the vacancy may do so by letter to be submitted to any member of the nominating commission, with a copy to the ex officio chair, no later than 5 p.m. July 26.



The members of the nominating commission for the Fifth Judicial District are Heather Beattie of Frisco, Heather Lemon of Vail, Maria Cecilia Smythe of Leadville, Katalin Spangler of Edwards, Peggy Stokstad of Evergreen and Daniel Wolf of Silverthorne. There is one vacancy on the commission.
