Samana hosts tsunami relief benefit tonight

VAIL – Samana is hosting a benefit for tsunami relief tonight from 7-10 p.m.Dave Laub and his crew of music virtuosos will set the night to music. There is a $10 entrance fee, which will be donated to Save the Children, and manager Scott Stoughton said they will also donate a portion of the bar sales to the aid organization.”It’s our small little effort to help the world,” he said.Stoughton organized the event with Mark Cervantes of Concierge Cervantes and the Holiday Inn/Apex Lodge in West Vail. Cervantes was the one who decided on Save the Children because of the organization’s honesty about where the money was going to go.”The woman from Save the Children was very frank. She said she couldn’t promise me that the money would be earmarked for a specific child or family because the area is in such disarray. But she promised me that they have people over there seeking out kids who need help and are getting the job done,” Cervantes said. “They are starting orphanages or rebuilding ones that existed. I told her I would like our money to be spent with that project, and she said she could do that. I really want people to know where I’m spending this money.”There will be a silent auction with donated items, including restaurant gift certificates, cashmere sweaters, lodging, a season pass to State Bridge Lodge in Bond, 20,000 vacation points and ski gear. The Vail community has rallied around the fund-raiser.”Our whole goal is to follow up. We fear that a lot of people won’t. When it’s in your face and on the news, people won’t forget. But once it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind,” Stoughton said. He and Cervantes plan on holding six more benefits. For more information, call the lounge at 476-3433.Vail, Colorado
