Scholarships available for musical theater master class in Edwards
Vail, CO Colorado
EDWARDS, Colorado – Slippery Slope Productions LLC and The Vail Valley Theatre Company will offer a musical theater master class in vocal performance and dance with 2009 Tony Award Winner Karen Olivo and noted choreographer/creative director Sergio Mejia at Battle Mountain High School in Edwards Jan. 8. This four-hour intensive workshop, which begins at 1 p.m., will improve audition techniques for performers of all abilities. The workshop will be separated into two groups – ages 9 to 13 and ages 14 to 35. Space is limited and advanced registration is required.
“We are pleased to be offering such a great opportunity to the community,” said Robert Wagner, owner of Slippery Slope Productions. “We are taking the craft of theater to a new level here in the valley. And part of that is to offer three youngsters who may have the desire but not the funds to attend this workshop by winning a scholarship.”
Those prospective participants who would like to be eligible to win one of the three scholarships available should submit an essay of 500 words or less describing their answer to the following: “Why is the theater so important in my life?” All submission should be sent by Dec. 30 to Slippery Slope Productions at P.O. Box 5257, Eagle, CO 81631.
Olivo recently starred as Anita in the acclaimed Broadway revival of “West Side Story,” a role which garnered her the 2009 Tony Award for “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical.” She also earned a Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Award for her portrayal of the iconic character. In addition, Olivo received her second straight Astaire Award nomination for best female dancer on Broadway, an award she won last year.
Mejia is a young, energetic, internationally-recognized choreographer, creative director, actor and dancer. Originally from California, he currently resides in New York. He has choreographed a wide variety of entertainers, most recently country singer Leann Rimes. His resume as a choreographer/creative director is a long one and includes such notable companies as Walt Disney (domestic and international), Nickelodeon, CBS, MTV, VH-1, NCAA, Clear Channel and most recently a commercial for XBOX for a new game called Dance Central.
