EAGLE – Now that Eagle County’s School’s $128 million bond has passed, school staff and board members are realizing the work has just begun. “We just had one of the biggest successes in the district,” Superintendent John Brendza said. “It proves that the community does support our schools. We just created an awful lot of work for ourselves.”Not only did the county vote for the school bond, the state defeated an amendment and referendum that would have put restrictions on how schools spend money. “All of the things that could have had a negative impact on us went down and everything that could have impacted us positively went up,” said Assistant Superintendent Karen Strakbein. “It’s was a very good night for us. The campaign committee did a phenomenal job for us.”Approval of the bond, which will go toward building new schools, including a new high school where Berry Creek Equestrian Center now stands, and updating existing ones, doesn’t mean the school district gets a $128 million check to play with. It’s a little more complicated than that. After wading through the legal paperwork, the district hopes to start selling bonds in early January. “It is better to plan well and come out of planning a little late than to rush through planning,” Strakbein said. Strakbein recommended the district ask Architectural Resource Consultants to act as the owner’s representative – someone hired by the district to make sure projects are done on time and on budget – on the construction of the new high school and new elementary school, the remolding of Eagle Valley High School and other repairs and upgrades, including Battle Mountain High School. If Architectural Resource Consultants’ price isn’t right, then Strakbein recommended soliciting other bids, but she wants the process done by Dec. 1. Also to be completed by Dec. 1, Strakbein also told the school board she’d like to get a price estimate from Ennovate Corporations to act as the project manager on energy-saving upgrades around the district, like energy-efficient boilers. The board has until Jan. 1 to figure out if they want a construction manager and hire one. Strakbein also advised the board to choose an architect for the projects by Dec. 31. As everyone gets to work, there are still a few outstanding issues – relocating Red Canyon High School, because the new elementary school will be built on Red Canyon’s east campus and what to do about a transportation center. “We just can’t wait to start implementing,” Strakbein said.
