School bus kills horse in Weld County
GREELEY, Colorado ” A school bus driver has been issued a ticket for leaving the scene of an accident that killed a horse and led to a second crash in Weld County.
Undersheriff Margie Martinez says a bus transporting 28 band students and three adults back to Weld Central High School after a trip to Universal Studios in Florida struck a horse at about 9:40 p.m. Monday.
The collision broke the windshield, but the driver allegedly failed to stop and notify authorities and instead continued on to the school in Keenesburg.
Martinez says four minutes after the collision, a vehicle driven by 40-year-old David Chacon of Greeley hit the dead horse and overturned.
Chacon was airlifted to a Denver hospital, but his condition wasn’t immediately available.
The bus driver’s name wasn’t released.
The precarious future of the town’s bighorn sheep herd is likely to affect a plan for rebuilding the town’s public works facility.
