School envisioned closer to Avon homes

AVON – Even though the Eagle County School Board has recommended building a new school between Chapel Square and Wal-Mart, the town leaders will make the ultimate decision.Three other spots were considered – two next to the roundabouts on the north side of Wal-Mart’s I-70 interchange (known as sites G and N); and one across the Eagle River from Paddy’s bar and grill (site M).”I would be willing to give that land,” said Magnus Lindholm, the developer of the Village at Avon, who is required to provide the town with 7.3 acres for a new school. “I’ve said all along that whatever the school wants, that’s what I want. They are the experts.”The Town Council will meet Tuesday to discuss the school board’s recommendation.”(The school board) took into account what the citizens said at the school meeting,” Avon Councilwoman Tamra Nottingham Underwood said. At a Nov. 17 meeting organized by the school district, the majority of people who voted informally chose the valley floor as the best place for a school.”I can’t take a formal position on it, but there are advantages on the valley floor in general,” Underwood said. “It’s where existing population and presumably future population of children will be and a school is an important part of a community.”When Eagle County School District Superintendent John Brendza discussed the locations with the Town Council on Nov. 23, some council members said putting the school on the valley floor would clash with the town’s growth policies, which are codified in what the town calls its “master plan.”Some also feared a school could sap businesses from nearby stores, but not Mayor Ron Wolfe.”The location the school board is proposing now will not conflict with the town’s master plan,” he said. “There are some places in the valley where it wouldn’t make sense to put (the school). “But this location is away from the most likely core of commercial and retail activity,” he added. “It’s on the fringes. It’s an area designated for residential construction.”Staff Writer Veronica Whitney can be reached at 949-0555, ext. 454 or Education locationWho: Avon Town CouncilWhat: Discussion of where to build a school at the Village at AvonWhen: 4 p.m., TuesdayWhere: Avon Municipal Building, 400 Benchmark RoadVail, Colorado
