Travis Hansbarger of Gypsum was life-flighted to Denver the night of Sept. 28 after the car he was riding in rolled over on Interstate 70 between Edwards and Wolcott.

The driver, 16-year-old Skylar Hootman, was killed in the accident. The other passenger, Laura Sandoval, also 17, was injured but has since been released from the hospital.

Hansbarger was in a coma until Oct. 9, but has since “progressed faster than any of us anticipated,” family members say.

Hansbarger is now recognizing and smiling at family members and close friends, family members say.

He is also making basic movements, such as shaking hands, waving to doctors and nurses and moving his arms and legs, family members say.

Hansbarger was transferred to Craig Hospital in Denver on Tuesday to begin extensive rehabilitation.

The family would like be contacted before friends visit Hansbarger. Letters or cards can be mailed to Craig Rehabilitation, 3425 S. Clarkson St., Englewood, CO, 80110.

In a statement, the family says they would like to thank residents of the Vail Valley and Glenwood Springs for their continued support and prayers.
