Senate Democrats set to pick Groff’s replacement

DENVER ” In the midst of fights over the state budget and school funding, Colorado state senators are getting ready to elect a new leader.

Senate President Peter Groff is stepping down at the end of the session to take a job in the Obama administration. That won’t happen for three more weeks, but senators are set to gather Friday to pick his replacement.

Caucus chairwoman Suzanne Williams said Democrats want to put the issue behind them so senators can focus on the tough decisions still pending this session.

The 120-day legislative session must end by May 6. Groff’s replacement won’t take over until after that.

Candidates for the job include Majority Leader Brandon Shaffer, President Pro-Tem Betty Boyd, Sen. Abel Tapia and Sen. John Morse.
