Senate panel backs vehicle fee increase for Colorado road repairs

Associated Press
Denver, CO Colorado

DENVER, Colorado ” A Senate committee has backed a plan to raise vehicle fees and possibly impose tolls to pay for bridge and road repairs, despite objections from truckers and rental car companies.

The Finance Committee on Thursday also decided to stick with a provision that allows the fees to rise with inflation and rejected a proposal to limit possible tolling to new roads.

Opponents say raising the gas or sales tax would be more fair.

But backers say raising fees would jump-start a backlog of repairs by summer and save thousands of jobs in the construction industry.
