VAIL VALLEY, Colorado ” Alan Wallace, a Buddhist scholar and author, will lead a weekend Vail Valley retreat, “Balancing Heart and Mind” on Saturday and Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Miller Ranch Community Center on 25 Mill Loft Street in Edwards.

The retreat will focus on meditation techniques: “mindfulness of breathing,” and “settling the mind in its natural state.”

There also will be instruction in Buddhism’s Four Immeasurables: loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity. Lectures and guided meditations will be interspersed with group discussions.

Wallace, who has practiced Buddhism since 1970, has taught Buddhist theory and meditation worldwide since 1976. After he trained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk for 14 years and was ordained by the Dalai Lama, he earned an undergraduate degree in physics and the philosophy of science at Amherst College. He got his doctorate in religious studies from Stanford.

The retreat is a celebration of the three-year anniversary of the founding of Bodhimarga, a Buddhist study and meditation group in Edwards, directed by the Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi.
