GLENWOOD SPRINGS – A Rifle man pleaded guilty Thursday to charges of kidnapping and attempted sexual assault on a child under a plea agreement that would send him to prison for 16 years.Loy Vondette, who already was a registered sex offender, agreed to the deal to avoid the possibility of conviction on other charges that could have put him in prison for the rest of his life.Asked by a judge why he was pleading guilty, Vondette answered, “I have done something that’s wrong and should be punished.”Vondette was accused of trying to coax two girls, ages 12 and 9, into his car in the Palomino Park subdivision in Rifle July 30. He also was charged with trying to entice a 10-year-old girl in Apple Tree Park in New Castle on June 20.Jim Conway, who represented Vondette as a public defender, said none of the girls got into Vondette’s car, and none was harmed.Vondette also is charged with harassment for allegedly propositioning an Eagle policeman’s wife on Aug. 4 while he was out on $25,000 bond for the Rifle incident.Vondette spent six years in prison after being convicted of two charges of sexual assault in 1993 in Garfield County. On Thursday Vondette pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted sexual assault on a child under 15 and second-degree kidnapping. Vondette will be required to register as a sex offender for life.Thursday’s plea bargain is contingent on a judge’s approval.Vail, Colorado
