Shaffer to replace Groff as Colorado Senate president

DENVER, Cplorado ” Colorado Senate Democrats have picked Majority Leader Brandon Shaffer of Longmont to replace Peter Groff as Senate president.

Other contenders decided to back Shaffer, so he was chosen without a secret ballot as originally planned.

Sen. John Morse of Colorado Springs was chosen to replace Shaffer as majority leader.

Groff is stepping down at the end of the session to take a job in the Obama administration.

Party leaders wanted to get the election out of the way so they could focus on tough decisions still pending this session.

Shaffer’s selection must still be formally ratified by the full Senate, but the minority party, now Republicans, usually defers to the leader picked by the majority party.
