Sheriff: Missing hiker likely lived couple of days

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado ” An autopsy has confirmed that a New Castle, Colorado woman whose body was found in a slot canyon in eastern Utah died of exposure.

Emery County, Utah, Sheriff Lamar Guymon says three hikers found the body of 54-year-old Rose Backhaus in the upper Chute Canyon area on Saturday. Law enforcement officials recovered her body the next day.

Guymon announced the autopsy results Tuesday.

Backhaus, of New Castle, Colo., was last seen Nov. 16 when she checked out of a Moab hotel and left the parking lot at a canyon trailhead. Crews searched for Backhaus for about a month after she was reported missing and intermittently after that.

But Guymon says Backhaus probably lived only a couple of days after disappearing amid difficult weather conditions.
