Simonton to run for treasurer
EAGLE COUNTY — Eagle County Clerk & Recorder Teak Simonton has announced her candidacy for Eagle County treasurer, an elected position on the November ballot.
Simonton has served as clerk for 13 years. Simonton said that while there is never a shortage of interesting challenges in the clerk’s office, staff expertise is now exceptional, and she has determined it is a good time to tackle new challenges and opportunities.
“My focus has always been to provide the best service possible to my employees, my colleagues and those we serve, with the greatest efficiency,” Simonton said. “I love organizing and managing complex projects, analyzing intricate systems and data and solving multifaceted problems. The position of clerk and recorder has been a very good fit for me in that regard. But my true interest and best skill set lies in finance and accounting.”
Graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1982 with a degree in international relations and economics, Simonton moved to Vail where she started working for a multi-location sporting goods and clothing business. She soon became the operations manager, overseeing all daily activities, staffing, purchasing, accounting and financial planning. Following the sale of the business to a Canadian corporation in 2000, Simonton recognized an opportunity to apply her skills to a new challenge, and redirected her energies to public service.

“She has always run a tight ship,” said Pitkin County Clerk and Recorder Janice Vos Caudill. “I have known Teak for over 10 years, and she has high energy and a very strong commitment for her constituents. She is focused, at point and professional. She is a leader who accomplishes her goals and challenges. As a public servant, I see her continually strive for efficiency and effectiveness in operations, while considering customer service foremost.”
Simonton has served on the capital improvements, benefits and compensation and budget committees at the county, and has been increasingly active since 2010 with governance and policy at the state level, where she chaired the Clerk’s Association Western District and the Statewide Elected Official Salary Commission. She currently co-chairs the Colorado Clerk’s Association’s Legislative Committee.
Longtime former treasurer Karen Sheaffer retired from that office in late 2015. The position is currently held by Mari Renzelman.
