Mexico’s Sinfónica de Minería took the Vail Valley by storm last summer, making history as the first Latin American orchestra to perform at Bravo! Vail Music Festival.
Caitlin Murray, Bravo! Vail’s president and CEO, reflected in a Vail Daily column that the orchestra’s performances and legendary encores were celebrated by festival audiences and noted that their “boundless energy, enthusiasm and visible passion for their art really set the tone for the rest of the season.”
It is no surprise, then, that Sinfónica de Minería was invited to return to Bravo! Vail this summer as the festival’s fifth featured orchestra — an expansion of the festival’s typical four-orchestra lineup. Their marquee performance will take place on June 26 at 6 p.m. at Harry A. Nottingham Park’s performance pavilion in Avon, with the venue’s expansive lake as its backdrop.

“This is our repertoire, and we do it like no other orchestra in the world—with a combination of joy and pride,” said Prieto. “This program will go directly to the hearts of anyone in attendance.”
The event will be family-friendly with food trucks, children’s crafts, and an instrument petting zoo, inviting families to explore a variety of instruments. A community fair will begin one hour before the concert in partnership with the Eagle Valley Community Foundation, featuring Mountain Youth, Walking Mountains Science Center, Habitat for Humanity and Battle Mountain High School’s Drumline. among other partners.
Beyond Sinfónica de Minería’s mainstage performance in Avon, members of the orchestra will perform across the valley as part of its residency. Highlights include free performances by the orchestra’s wind ensemble at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards (June 23), a string quartet at Gypsum Town Hall (June 25), and a brass ensemble at Eagle Flight Days (June 27). The Sinfónica de Minería percussion ensemble and string quartet will open Bravo! Vail’s Chamber Music Series at the Donovan Pavilion (June 24), joined by Prieto on second violin and Bravo! Vail Artistic Director and pianist Anne-Marie McDermott.

Prieto, who also serves as music director of the North Carolina Symphony and regularly guest conducts with top orchestras around the world, will make his conducting debut with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra on July 1, following the Sinfónica de Minería residency. As a homeowner in Beaver Creek, he is especially enthusiastic about bringing Sinfónica de Minería’s artistry and energy back to the Vail Valley.
“People can expect the highest level of musicianship, plus an involvement and enthusiasm that is a trademark of Sinfónica de Minería,” Prieto said. “On top of that, our musicians are willing to contribute as much time and energy as possible to do outreach events for this incredibly vibrant community.”
