Sinkhole forces detour on I-70
RULISON, Colorado ” The eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Rifle have reopened following initial work to repair a large sinkhole.
But transportation officials say the left eastbound lane will be shut down again Friday for more work and could remain closed into next week.
The Colorado Department of Transportation shut down both eastbound lanes Wednesday evening after a maintenance crew discovered the hole. Traffic was diverted onto U.S. 6 between Rulison and Rifle.
The department says the hole was about 6 feet in diameter and 8 inches deep. Crews then excavated it to 35 feet in diameter and 8 feet deep to examine the problem. They determined the sinkhole was caused by a water-filled “void” around a Williams Production gas pipeline.
The department says the company is fixing the pipeline problem and has agreed to pay for the road repairs.
