Sir John Birch to speak for Vail Symposium
VAIL – America has given more to the cause of freedom than any other country in the 20th century. With the challenges of the new century, from terrorism and extremism to poverty and the environment, how far and for how much longer, can the United States influence and determine events around the globe?The Vail Symposium will address this topic in a presentation by Sir John Birch on from 5:30-7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Cordillera Valley Club. Ambassador Birch will compare the current role of the United States against Britain’s past experience as a Super Power, and he will attempt to ascertain the best balance between imperial power and the moral authority that inspired the Declaration of Independence.Sir John was most recently the Director of the British Association for Central and Eastern Europe, an association which supports the development of democratic institutions in the former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
A British citizen, Sir John spent nearly 50 years in the foreign diplomatic service during which time he served as Ambassador to Hungary, where he was responsible for the promotion of British political, commercial and cultural interests in Hungary. He has held diplomatic posts in Budapest, Kabul, Geneva, Bucharest, Singapore and Paris. From 1986 to 1989, Sir John served as Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during which time he was the President of the Trusteeship Council of the United Nations. Admission is $20 for Vail Symposium supporters and $25 for all others. The presentation will take place at the Cordillera Valley Club with light refreshments and a cash bar offered from 5:30-6 p.m., followed by Ambassador Birch’s presentation from 6-7:15 pm. An optional buffet dinner is offered for $37 following the presentation.
