Skateboarder hit by van in Eagle-Vail
Vail CO, Colorado
EAGLE-VAIL ” A skateboarder was taken to the hospital after being hit by a van in Eagle-Vail around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
Bill Graves, of Edwards, was headed west on Highway 6 when he hit the male skateboarder, who police say looked to be in his 20s.
“I want to go to the hospital,” to see the skateboarder, Graves said. “There was nothing I could do.”
The skateboarder was getting off a bus near the Eagle Road intersection when he dropped his skateboard and began to ride it across the crosswalk, Graves said.
Graves slammed on his brakes, but it was too late to stop, he said.
Police did not know the name of the skateboarder.
Graves had a green light with a green arrow while the east lanes had a red light, police said. Graves said he thinks the skateboarder saw the cars stopped on the other side and did not realize that cars were traveling in the other lanes.
The skateboarder said his name and was moving around when a group of people got out of their cars to help, Graves said.
Graves probably was going the speed limit and was not ticketed, said Trooper Jeff Gowin of the Colorado State Patrol.
