Skating classes at Vail’s Dobson Arena begin this week

VAIL, Colorado ” Registration is now open for Learn to Skate, Freestyle Jumps and Spins, Mini Mite and Mite Hockey, Squirt Recreational Hockey, and ShowTime Skating programs at Dobson Ice Arena in Vail, Colorado.

These programs help skaters ages 4-14 learn and improve. Online registration is available at

Dobson Ice Arena is operated by the Vail Recreation District and offers adult ice hockey leagues, adult broomball league, public skating, children’s skating classes, stick and puck sessions and events. The Vail Recreation District has also teamed up with the Vail Public Library to offer Story Time Skating for preschool-aged children.

Children learn to skate at Dobson followed by story time at the library. The program is on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The cost is $10 and includes skates and instruction.

Learn to Skate, Oct. 15 to Nov. 19, $90

Learn to Skate is for children ages four and older who are interested in learning the basics of either figure or ice hockey skating. Classes are on Wednesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., and 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Junior Prep, Jumps and Spins, Oct. 13 to Nov. 17, $120

These classes are an extension of the learn to skate program and teach advanced tricks and skills. Skaters ages six and older must pass the basic level six to participate. Classes include 30 minutes of instruction followed by 60 minutes of freestyle skating. Classes are on Mondays from 4:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

VRD Mini Mite and Mite Hockey, Oct. 15 to Dec. 21, and Jan. 6 to March 1, $150 for one session or $250 for both sessions

Children ages five to eight learn the fundamentals of ice hockey through instruction and competition in these groups. Both groups practice on Tuesdays from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Mini Mite sessions are on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., followed by Mite sessions from 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. There will be two weekends of scheduled games during the season at the Eagle Ice Rink. Equipment rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-register for both sessions and receive an additional $75 discount, compliments of the Vail Eagle Hockey Association.

VRD Squirt Recreational Hockey, Oct. 14 to Feb. 28, $250

Now in its fourth season, the squirt hockey program teaches skaters ages nine and 10 advanced skills and tips. Squirt hockey is Tuesdays from 6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., and Saturday practices and games are scheduled with teams from Eagle and surrounding towns. Rental equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

ShowTime Skating: The Society of the Super Heroes, begins Dec. 3

ShowTime Skating is for skaters who like the spotlight, similar to dance recital classes. Classes include rehearsal time, costumes, choreography and skate rentals. This season’s program will feature “The Society of the Super Heroes” and pay tribute to classic super heroes including Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers and Spiderman. Classes begin Dec. 1 and cost $120 for one number, or $195 for two numbers. All skaters will skate in two performances on Dec. 27-28.
