GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Authorities are asking for information about Sunday’s shooting of a Glenwood Springs police officer and have released a composite sketch of a person of interest in the case.

“None of us wants such an action to go without the criminal being held accountable for his actions in a court of law,” Police Chief Terry Wilson wrote in an e-mail. “And we need the help of our community in solving this case.”

Residents have been calling and e-mailing local law enforcement to express support, said Tanny McGinnis, a spokeswoman for the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

“I felt like I needed to stop right now and call and make sure to tell the officers in this area that protect me and my family just how thankful we are for them,” one e-mail said.

A Glenwood Springs Police officer was checking a storage area just south of the airport when he saw someone jump off a fence, police said.

When he saw two males walking away from him, he told them to stop.

One of the men turned and fired multiple shots, hitting the officer once in the chest from around 10 to 20 feet away, police said.

The officer returned multiple gunshots as the two men fled south, but was unsure if he hit either man, Wilson said.

The bullet was stopped by a bulletproof vest, and the officer did not sustain serious physical injuries.

A reward of up to $4,000 is offered to anyone with information leading to arrest or prosecution of suspects. Anyone can call (970)945-0101 with information and remain anonymous.
