Ski shops hold wax-a-thon

Mari Darr-Welch/Associated PressResidents attempt to enter their totally destroyed home on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain in Slidell, La.

EAGLE COUNTY ” A pair of local ski shops will wax skis and snowboards in exchange for donations to Gulf Coast victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Ski season still a couple months away, but the ‘wax-a-thon’ starts today and ends Tuesday at Christy Sports, which has stores in Vail and Avon, and Venture Sports in Avon.

All of the proceeds will go to the Red Cross, said Dano Bruno, a boot specialist at Christy Sports and one of the drive’s organizers.

“I have one friend who has lost his entire house,” Bruno said. “He was able to escape to Houston, but he lost everything.”

Bruno hasn’t heard from another friend who lives in a neighborhood that Bruno saw on TV under 20 feet of water, he said.

“Most of us don’t have a lot of money,” he said. “We’re not in the position to make contributions, but we can do this.

“Hopefully the money we get is going to make a difference ” I know it’s going to make a difference,” he added.

Mike Brumbaugh, an owner of Venture Sports, said he doesn’t have family in New Orleans, but he’s been riveted by TV footage of the disaster. His mother, however, lives on the east coast of Florida and her home was damaged by hurricanes last year when a tree crashed through her roof.

Friends helped her repair her home, Brumbaugh said.

“If we can send a couple thousand dollars down there and it helps somebody else’s mom get a roof on their house, get some water or a generator,” he said, “that’s the least we can do.”
