LEADVILLE, Colorado ” If you think there are too many athletic competitions in Leadville for any one human, you’ll be happy to know that Leadville races are going to the dogs.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Mount Massive Mush, a sled dog and skijor race, will be held at the Mount Massive golf course. It will be followed by the Shelter Dog Shuffle on Sunday afternoon.

The Mount Massive Mush has historically been a great event for spectators.

As they did last year, racers will start and finish at the golf course clubhouse; in between, they will travel across the fairways and into the nearby forest. Races start at 9:30 a.m. on both days, and the Leadville Lions will be on hand throughout the day, selling bratwurst, homemade chili, coffee, wine and beer.

Last year’s Mount Massive Mush was the best-attended event of the 2007 Colorado sled dog racing season, according to organizers Steph Dwyer and Fritz Howard.

Hundreds of spectators turned out to watch 48 dog teams race.

The race is organized by Leadville locals Dwyer and Howard, in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club, a nonprofit that organizes several races around Colorado each year. Craig Stuller and the Mount Massive Golf Course host the race and provide facilities and trail grooming equipment.
