Skier dies after accident at Vail
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL ” Lakewood resident Martin Fierro died Saturday after a skiing accident that happened in Blue Sky Basin on Vail Mountain.
Fierro, 32, was skiing with a friend on the blue run In the Wuides. The friend stopped on the run to wait for Fierro, and called ski patrol when Fierro did not come, said Sheriffs Office Lt. Kim Andre.
Vail Ski Patrol responded to the call at 10:50 a.m. Ski patrol provided advanced life support and transported Fierro to an awaiting ambulance at the bottom of the mountain. He was then transported to the Vail Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Fierro was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
Cause of death is still under investigation, pending the coroner’s autopsy, said Andre.
Fierro’s death comes shortly after the death of Aspen snowboarder Wallace Westfeldt, 22, who fell to his death in the TOnar Bowl near Aspen Highlands on Friday.
At least 20 people have died from skiing or snowboarding accidents in Colorado this season, including three who were in the backcountry.
