Skier killed in Aspen backcountry cliff jump

ASPEN, Colorado ” A man who jumped off a cliff while skiing outside the Aspen Highlands ski area has died.

Pitkin County Deputy Coroner Chuck Johnson identified the man as 22-year-old Wallace Westfeldt. Coroner’s officials were awaiting autopsy results before determining the cause of death.

Sheriff’s deputy Renee Rayton says the Aspen-area resident was riding with a small group when the accident happened Friday morning.

Another member of the group tried to resuscitate him. Sheriff’s officials asked ski area officials to help reach him, but he died shortly after ski patrol arrived.

Rayton did not know what injuries Westfeldt suffered.
