Slideshow presentation on Ute Indians in Avon
Avon CO, Colorado
AVON ” On Tuesday evening, author Dr. Peter Decker will share a slide presentation on the policies and incidents that led to the forced exit migration of the Ute Indians from Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. The presentation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Avon Public Library. Dr. Decker’s lecture will cover events which occurred during the 19th century, including the migration of settlers into native territory, and the Meeker Massacre.
“This year’s speaker series has taken us from the migration routes of the ancient Anasazi, along the Ute trail, and will conclude with Dr. Decker’s presentation on the involuntary migration of the Utes from our region,” said Michelle Marx, adult services librarian at the Avon Public Library. “We’re looking forward to hearing his contributions to this ongoing conversation.”
Holding a Ph.D. from Columbia University, Dr. Decker taught American history at Barnard College and Columbia University, and public policy and history at Duke University. He has served on the Colorado Commission of Higher Education, and as Commissioner of Agriculture. Major publications by Dr. Decker include books “Old Fences, New Neighbors”; “Fortunes and Failures” and “The Utes Must Go!: American Expansion and the Removal of a People.” Currently, Decker is a director of the National Western Stock Show, and continues to operate his cattle ranch in Ridgway.
Dr. Decker’s presentation is the final installment in the 7th annual High Country Speaker Series, “People, Paths, Perspectives: Exploring Native Migrations,” presented free to the public by the Eagle Valley Library District and Gore Range Natural Science School.
