Slow Food gears up for Earth Day

VAIL – Slow Food Vail Valley celebrates Earth Day with two events this weekend. On Friday, the group will travel to Gypsum to learn about smoked salmon. On Saturday, Slow Food, and other valley organizations, are throwing a Vail Valley Earth Day Celebration.Slow Food is an international organization that believes the enjoyment of wholesome food is essential to the pursuit of happiness. It is an educational organization dedicated to promoting stewardship of the land and ecologically sound food production and to revive the kitchen and the table as the centers of pleasure, culture and community.Slow Food member Richard McCreadie, executive chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch organized the visit to Eagle Smoked Salmon in Gypsum from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Eagle Smoked Salmon Owner Andrew Osborne is a local producer of smoked salmon and will discuss the process and how he obtains his products in this exclusive tour. There is a suggested $5 donation.Slow Food, the Vail Symposium and E.A.R.T.H. present the second annual Vail Valley Earth Day Celebration at the Eagle-Vail Pavilion from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. This is a family-focused event that will feature activities especially for kids of all ages, such as learning and information booths, crafts, games, live music and food. A highlight of the of the day will be the building of a labryinth community sculpture made entirely of recycled materials, for which donations are still needed. The newly restored greenhouse at Battle Mountain High School will be open to visitors. There, guests are invited to make recycled plantable paper.
