Snowboarders: Vail’s No.5
Transworld Snowboarding, which publishes an annual guide, had its readers rate resorts by their terrain parks and half-pipes as well as their overall snowboarding. Three separate resorts garnered top honors in those categories, while Vail slipped downward a notch to fifth in the snowboard resort category while Breckenridge retained its third place ranking.
“Readers make all the calls and we trust them to know what’s up because they’re the ones shredding North America’s local hills day in and day out,” said Transworld’s editor, Kurt Hoy. “We just tally up the votes and spread the word.”
Snow Summit, Calif., has the best terrain park, according to respondents of the survey. Mammoth, Calif., was second, Whistler/Blackcomb, B.C., was third, Breckenridge was fourth and Vail was fifth.
Mammoth had the best half-pipe. Breckenridge’s fourth and Vail’s was fifth.
The best snowboarding resort overall was Whistler/Blackcomb, while Mammoth was second, Breckenridge was third and Vail was fifth.
Snowboarders are becoming a mainstay at ski resorts, making up 21 percent of mountain users at properties owned by Vail Resorts in Colorado, said spokeswoman Kelly Ladyga. The percentage of snowboarders has grown over the last five years from 12 percent.
“Clearly snowboarders are extremely important to Vail,” said Vail spokeswoman Jen Brown. “They represent more than 20 percent of our mountain users.”
Breckenridge hosts more snowboarders than other Vail Resorts mountain and also has more than what is typical for the Rocky Mountain region, said Christian Knapp, senior marketing manager at Breckenridge.
“They represent an opportunity for us,” he said. “They represent 26 percent of our visits.”
