Breckenridge, CO Colorado

BRECKENRIDGE, Colorado ” A fundraiser in Breckenridge, Colorado organized by two backcountry skiers has helped the Colorado Avalanche Information Center cover a $25,000 shortfall as the agency heads into its busy season.

More than 70 businesses donated to the Nov. 8 event organized by Aaron Carlson and Joe Vandal in Breckenridge. The avalanche information center was facing a deficit of at least 10 percent due to the loss of a major fundraiser and cutbacks by a major donor.

The agency is part of the Colorado Geological Survey and provides avalanche forecasts for all the state’s mountain ranges to state transportation officials, backcountry skiers and others.

The center says since 1950, avalanches have killed more people in Colorado than any other natural hazard.
