You won’t find Vail Resorts’ new SnowMate adorning a calendar. In fact, SnowMate isn’t flesh and blood, but a virtual model named Trevvor.

But Trevvor isn’t a sexy model that’s sure to get attention. Instead, he’s an animated character on your computer who alerts skiers with daily snow updates at the company’s four Colorado resorts.

It’s part of a growing Internet marketing and information campaign mounted by the resort operator. More than 30 percent of the company’s reservations come from online bookings, says Kam Rope, Vail Resorts senior manager of online marketing and sales.

“In the last two years we increased our focus in all our marketing to drive traffic to our branded Websites,” Rope said. “This is different in that it’s a desktop branding tool. You don’t have to look at e-mail or be on a Web site.”

In other words, a reminder about the ski resorts operated by Vail Resorts ir right in front of your nose.

The new downloadable snow alert system system allows the resort company to quickly and inexpensively provide skiers with attention-grabbing messages about new snow, a powder day or a snowstorm in progress.

“Grab your skis. It’s dumping Trevvor will provide links to lodging offers, photos, video clips, a screensaver and it also contains a “send to a friend’ feature. That “viral marketing’ allows he ski company’s brand to replicate without having to spend time, effort or money,” Rope said.
