Snowmobiler crashes, dies near Aspen

LENADO – A 31-year-old Portland, Ore. man died Thursday evening in a snowmobile accident near Lenado, about five miles northwest of Aspen.

Shane William Bennett was snowmobiling with friends when his machine left the road and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene from head and neck trauma, according to the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office. His death was ruled accidental.

Authorities were notified of the accident at about 6:45 p.m. A caller reported that a man had been thrown from his snowmobile about 2.5 miles north of Lenado on County Road 18. He was not breathing, according to the report. Bennett’s companions performed CPR until paramedics from Aspen Ambulance arrived at the scene.

Pitkin County deputies, paramedics, volunteers with the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department and members of Mountain Rescue Aspen all responded. Traveling on snowmobile, the first responders arrived at about 7:20 p.m. and continued the resuscitation efforts until 8 p.m., when Bennett was declared dead.

His body was transported via snowmobile to the parking area, and then taken to Aspen Valley Hospital.

The area beyond Lenado on County Road 18 is popular with snowmobilers during the winter months, when it’s generally inaccessible to regular vehicle traffic.
