Snowmobilers spend night in Mesa Co. blizzard
GRAND JUNCTION Three snowmobilers were reached this morning after spending the night in blizzard conditions on the Uncompahgre Plateau, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office .Late last night a call was made to dispatch to report three snowmobilers who had not returned home after a day of playing in the powder. The three were expected home in time for the Super Bowl, but by 11 p.m. last night were reported overdue.Due to the preparedness of snowbomilers and the harsh weather conditions, Mesa County Search and Rescue snowmobile members were not deployed into the Divide Road area on the Uncompahgre until 5 a.m. today. Search & Rescue located the three snowmobilers at 8:20 a.m.Chet Smith, 35, of Grand Junction; Gregory Cole, 38, of Palisade; and Bart Sunn, 35,unknown, were all found in good condition.Search and Rescue members totaled more than 10 on this mission.Mesa County Search and Rescue and the Sheriffs Office do not charge for rescuemissions. They are able to apply for reimbursement through the registration of outdoor equipment like snowmobiles and ATVs.
