A group of snowshoers were traveling along the Emerald Lake Trail, located on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park, on Tuesday, Jan. 21 when one snowshoer triggered an avalanche near Nymph Lake that carried three people and partially buried one person to their knees, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Nobody was injured, but the center is warning anyone traveling through the backcountry to use caution when recreating.
This is the second time this month that an avalanche has caught and buried snowshoers, prompting warnings from the avalanche information center. The snowshoer triggered the avalanche while crossing a steeper slope and breaking trail, according to the avalanche report.
“Wherever you plan to travel in the backcountry, whether it’s on skis, foot, snowshoes or snowmobile, it’s all about avoiding trigger points. You can travel to many places without incident, but if you find just the wrong spot on the wrong slope, you can still trigger a dangerous slide,” the center wrote in a post on social media.
Before venturing out into the backcountry, the center urges recreationists to look at avalanche forecasts at Colorado.gov/Avalanche.
