Soldier, girlfriend missing on Colorado hike

DECKERS, Colorado – A search is under way for a Fort Carson soldier and his girlfriend who failed to return from a day hike in the mountains of the Pike National Forest over the weekend.

The pair were expected to return Saturday night from their trip about 45 miles southwest of Denver, but they haven’t been seen.

Their names haven’t been released. The soldier is 26 and his girlfriend is 19.

Jefferson County authorities say the soldier was not facing deployment and they have no reason to believe he and the woman were running away.

About 160 people from Summit, Arapahoe and Douglas counties and from Fort Carson are participating in the search, along with two helicopters and two fixed-wing planes.
