Buddy Doll’s recent letter on immigration had some errors that need to be addressed.
The president’s proposal on the illegal issue has nothing to do with giving anyone temporary citizenship. He doesn’t have the power, according to the law, to do that.
He was proposing temporary immigration status of one year at a time for working visas only. He has not even suggested giving temporary green cards. You need a green card for seven years before you can even apply for citizenship.
Only citizens have the privilege of voting in the USA. (Current wording sounds like if you apply for citizenship you can vote.) So the president’s plan, which must be passed by Congress to become a reality, is not politically self- serving, as there are no votes attached.
